Checkout Drop-off on Indian Shopify Stores: 7 Fixes, Ranked by Impact

Discover the biggest causes of checkout abandonment on Indian Shopify stores and learn how to improve payment success, simplify checkout, reduce friction, and increase conversions.

Quick answer: The biggest checkout drop-offs on Indian Shopify stores usually come from, in rough order of impact: payment failures, shipping and COD charges revealed too late, long address forms, forced account creation, slow or confusing UPI flows, missing payment options, and poor mobile performance. Fix measurement first, then tackle these in order, and test one change at a time.

Customers who reach checkout have already decided they want the product. When they leave there, the loss is expensive: you have paid for the traffic, won the product decision, and lost the sale in the last few steps.

In India the causes of drop-off are specific. Mobile-first shoppers, UPI, COD, patchy connections and uneven address data all shape what goes wrong. This post ranks the fixes we look at, starting with the ones that usually deliver the largest gain.

First, measure where people leave

Do not start changing things until you know where the funnel breaks. Build a simple funnel from your analytics: product page view, add to cart, begin checkout, contact information, shipping, payment, purchase.

Then segment it by device, payment method and traffic source. A 60 per cent drop between payment and purchase on mobile UPI tells a very different story from a 60 per cent drop between cart and begin checkout.

Also compare against Shopify’s own checkout reports, to be sure your tracking is firing correctly on every step and every payment method.

1. Payment failures

A failed payment is the most painful kind of drop-off, because the customer wanted to buy. Failure has several sources:

•     Bank or issuer downtime, especially on specific banks during peak hours

•     UPI timeouts or intent failures when the customer’s app does not open correctly

•     3-D Secure and OTP problems on cards

•     Gateway configuration issues, such as unsupported card types or limits

•     Network drops on mobile data mid-transaction

Ask your gateway for success rates broken down by method and bank. Many stores discover that one method performs poorly and nobody has noticed. Consider adding a second gateway or a smart-routing layer, and make sure a failed attempt returns the customer to the payment step with a clear message and one-tap retry, not to an empty cart.

2. Shipping and COD charges that appear late

Surprise costs are one of the most reliably reported reasons for abandonment. If shipping, a COD fee or taxes appear for the first time on the last step, a share of customers will leave.

Show delivery cost and estimated delivery date as early as you can: on the product page via a pincode checker, and in the cart. If you charge a COD fee, state it near the payment choice rather than adding it silently. If you offer free shipping above a threshold, show progress toward it in the cart.

Where margins allow, building shipping into the product price and offering “free shipping” tests well in many categories. Whether it works for yours is a question for a test, not an opinion.

3. Address and contact form friction

Typing a full address on a phone is a chore, and incomplete addresses cause failed deliveries later. Improve both sides:

•     Reduce required fields to what you need. Phone and pincode matter more than company name or a second address line.

•     Use pincode autofill, which fills city and state from the pincode.

•     Use address lookup or autocomplete where available.

•     Keep the phone field numeric with the right keyboard and country code.

•     Validate in place with plain error messages, rather than showing an error after the form is submitted.

Shopify’s checkout supports autofill and address suggestions, and quick-checkout providers use stored addresses from their networks to pre-fill details for returning shoppers.

4. Forced account creation and slow login

Requiring an account before purchase is a known conversion killer, and it is unnecessary. Use guest checkout. If you want accounts, offer them after purchase.

Where login is offered, use phone number and one-time password rather than email and password, because it matches how most Indian customers expect to sign in. Keep the OTP flow quick: message delivery delays will lose customers, so check your SMS or WhatsApp provider’s delivery speed.

5. UPI flow problems

UPI is the dominant digital payment method for many Indian shoppers, so its behaviour at checkout matters a great deal.

•     Offer UPI intent (opening the customer’s installed app) and UPI collect or QR where relevant, and check which works better for your audience.

•     Show the most popular apps with recognisable icons.

•     Handle the return from the UPI app gracefully. If the customer comes back to a blank or error screen, many will not retry.

•     Test on real devices and several apps, not only in a desktop browser.

Test payments yourself every week. Payment flows break silently, and a regular test purchase on a few devices is cheap insurance.

6. Missing or poorly ordered payment options

Customers abandon when their preferred method is absent or hidden. Check that you offer UPI, major cards, net banking, popular wallets, EMI for higher-value items and COD where it makes commercial sense. Order the options by what your customers actually use — often UPI first — and mark the recommended method.

For brands with a large COD share, review our post on controlling return-to-origin losses, since the way you present COD affects both conversion and returns.

7. Mobile performance and layout

A slow checkout loses customers who never tell you why. Test on mid-range Android devices over 4G. Common culprits include heavy third-party scripts loaded at checkout, auto-playing elements and layout shifts that move buttons as the page loads.

Shopify’s checkout is hosted and fast by default; slowdowns usually come from what you add to it. Review every script, pixel and app that loads at checkout, and remove anything that is not earning its place.

Should you use a quick-checkout provider?

One-click or quick-checkout products, such as GoKwik, Razorpay Magic Checkout and Shopflo, are widely used by Indian Shopify brands. They reduce typing by pre-filling known customers, and often add COD controls and address validation.

They are not automatic improvements. Evaluate them on your own numbers: checkout conversion, payment success rate, RTO impact, fees, and how well they report data into your analytics. Run the provider against your native checkout as a test before committing, and read the contract for fee and data terms. Our comparison of GoKwik and Razorpay Magic Checkout covers the practical differences.

How to run the work

1.      Fix tracking and baseline your funnel.

2.      List all abandoned-checkout reasons you can find: gateway logs, support tickets, session recordings.

3.      Fix technical failures first. They need no test.

4.      Test the commercial changes — shipping display, COD fees, prepaid incentives, quick checkout — one at a time.

5.      Review weekly and keep a log of what changed and when.

Abandoned-cart recovery through WhatsApp, email and SMS is worth setting up too, but treat it as a safety net, not a substitute for fixing the checkout.

Frequently asked questions

What is a normal checkout abandonment rate?

Published cart abandonment figures commonly sit around 70 per cent, but they vary by category and by how they are measured. Compare your own funnel by device and payment method rather than relying on a benchmark.

Can I customise the Shopify checkout in India?

Yes, within limits. Shopify supports checkout customisation through extensibility, apps and Shopify Functions, with the deepest options on Shopify Plus. A checkout audit will tell you what is possible on your plan.

Does one-click checkout always improve conversion?

Not always. Results depend on your customer base and implementation. Test against your native checkout and compare conversion, RTO and fees.

How do I find out why payments fail?

Ask your gateway for success rates by method, bank and device, and check error codes in the dashboard. Combine this with session recordings and your own test purchases.
